Ilana Schmitt: Urges support for in-person visitation

Tuesday, August 08, 2017

In the recent articles regarding in person visits to jail inmates (“The personal touch,” July 29), there were two beautiful photographs of families reading together. I was moved at the implicit recognition shown in the photos: Reading aloud enhances bonds between parents and their children. Reading aloud to young children also promotes young brains’ reading readiness, and paves the way for school success. But let’s not overlook the emotional benefits.

As for substituting “non-contact visits” in place of in-person visits, how can children cuddle over a book on an incarcerated parent’s lap through a video? Support bill S.1335, and enjoy opportunities to read aloud to young children in your life.
