NORTHAMPTON — The South Hadley Public Library has opened its curbside pickup service to new holds for the first time since its temporary closing in March.

On June 1, the library began to loan books that patrons had placed on hold prior to Gov. Charlie Baker’s shutdown order in March, which closed the library and much of the state economy to limit the spread of COVID-19. The curbside service now been expanded to new holds, Library Director Joe Rodio announced on Monday.

Holds can include materials from both the South Hadley Public Library and Gaylord Memorial Library shelves.

Patrons can place holds on the library’s online catalog or by calling the library at 413-538-5045. Staff will schedule an appointment for patrons to pick up their requested materials, which staff will leave in a bag in the vestibule between the two sets of doors leading into the library.

Staff can also put together a “grab bag” style assortment of books, DVDs and other materials “based on interest and availability,” Rodio said.
