SOUTH HADLEY — Hunter Borowski scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with less than a minute remaining as the South Hadley football team beat Putnam, 34-25, Friday night.

The game-winning score came after a sack on third down for the Tigers that forced the Beavers to punt. The punt, however, was blocked by Ryan Levrault on the 20-yard line and returned to the 4 by Borowski.

South Hadley then held Putnam scoreless in the last minute.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the game as no one held more than a one-score lead.

“What a great football game,” South Hadley coach Scott Taylor said. “It’s a shame somebody had to lose this one. Both teams played hard and neither team quit, which is what all coaches ask for.”

On the opening kickoff, Liam Dawson of South Hadley took the kick 80 yards for a touchdown after breaking a tackle and making a move to get to the outside of the field.

Despite the spark of the opening kick, South Hadley struggled to score in the first half. Putnam led 12-6 at the half.

“I think we struggled a little bit, certainly in the first half, we kind of went to a more base offense, made a few substitutions, and it seemed to get the ball rolling a little bit,” Taylor said. “Sometimes it’s like a heavyweight fight and you have to spar the first couple of rounds.”

The scoring in the second half was lead by Borowski, who started at quarterback in the place of Ethan Murphy, who played the first half. Borowski finished the game with 35 yards rushing, three rushing touchdowns, a 2-point conversion, a fumble recovery and blocked punt recovery.

Murphy had one completed pass for 1 yard. Dawson completed two passes for 30 yards. Murphy for 18 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Dawson finished with 71 yards rushing.

“It was nice to be healthy again,” Taylor said. “We have lost a couple of kids for the season after East Longmeadow. This was Liam’s first game back. … We started three freshmen tonight. I can’t be prouder of my guys.”
