An up-and-down contest saw host St. Mary’s hang on for an independent girls basketball victory over Smith Vocational on Monday night in Westfield.

The Saints built an early lead and managed to secure a 43-40 victory.

Smith Voc saw its six-game winning streak halted with the loss, as the Vikings dropped to 6-4 overall on the season.

St. Mary’s (8-3) led 13-10 after one quarter and 19-15 at halftime.

Sofia Zina went for a team-high 14 points for the Vikings, and Makayla Tatro made it two Smith Voc players in double figures with 11. Julianis Suarez added five points while Caitlin Willard and Jayanna Daniels each scored four points.

Northampton 71, West Springfield 14 – It was a downright dominant outing from the Blue Devils, which led 22-6 after one quarter and 42-6 at halftime en route to the lopsided victory.

Ava Azzaro continued her offensive tear, scoring a game-high 25 points in the win for Northampton. Bri Heafey tossed in 16 points on the night, drilling four 3-pointers, while Neoma Lane and Chloe Derby each added six points.

Wahconah 42, Amherst 35 – Zola Higham scored 12 of her team-high 14 points in the second half, as visiting Amherst rallied back but ultimately dropped a Suburban League contest in Dalton on Monday.

Wahconah (8-2) led 24-12 at halftime and 32-20 after three quarters before the Hurricanes cut the margin to single digits with a big fourth. Shannon Klaes added nine points for Amherst.

Mahar 39, Easthampton 37 – The host Senators rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit, outscoring Easthampton by a 15-6 margin in the fourth to earn the Franklin County League North win.

Christine Raymond paced the Eagles with 11 points, and Kayley Downie joined her in double figures with 10. Easthampton led 23-18 at halftime.

Baystate 43, Gateway 41 – Amy Fisk and Kaitlyn Maynard keyed the Gators offensively in a tight loss on Monday.

Fisk went for 15 points to pace Gateway, and Maynard scored 14 on the night. Lizmarie Sanchez propeled Baystate Academy with 23 points.

Frontier 59, Hopkins 9 — The Redhawks raced out to a 36-5 halftime lead, paving the way to a Franklin County League North win at Goodnow Gymnasium on Monday. 

Harper Modestow finished with 10 points, Jazzy Hayes tallied nine points, Skyler Steele, Claire Kirkendall and Olivia Machon each recorded eight points while Ashley Taylor scored seven points in the victory for Frontier. 

Cora White led Hopkins with three points. 

Renaissance 74, Granby 33 – Aubrey Parent’s nine points led the way for the Rams in a loss on Monday.

Autumn Sicard added six points for Granby.

Boys basketball

Mount Everett 63, Smith Voc 62 – The Vikings rallied from deficits throughout the contest but couldn’t come all the way back in a one-point loss.

Mount Everett led 41-35 at halftime and 52-47 after three. Myles Chinappa led the way for the Vikings with 20 points, followed by Dom Sanchez with 17 points and Jack Riley with 11. Smith Voc drained 10 3-pointers on the night.

Girls swimming

Central 98, Northampton 85 – The Blue Devils swept all three relays in Monday’s dual loss to Springfield Central.

Amalia Guerra, Annika Bergstreiser, Caiel Kilip-Leonard and Juliet Mitchell won the 200-yard medley relay (2:12.42), while Guerra, Bergstreiser, Mitchell and Ursula Von Goeler touched first in the 200 free relay (1:57.51). Rounding out the sweep was the winning 400 free relay quartet of Mitchell, Jayda Alejandro, Saumya Kulp and Bergstreiser (9:44.48).

Guerra won a pair of individual events for Northampton, taking first in the 200 free (2:06.74) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.72), and Von Goeler won the diving event (225.15 points).

Boys swimming

Central 86, Northampton 76 – Jack Mattison-Gulotta and Reed Mitchell each won two events for the Blue Devils in a tight dual defeat on Monday.

Mattison-Gulotta was first in the 100-yard backstroke (59.45 seconds) and 500 freestyle (4:53.34), and Mitchell won the 200 IM (2:13.37) and 100 free (52.41).

Gus Fallon, Reed Mitchell, Jack Mattison-Gulotta and Tyler Palm teamed to win the 200 medley relay (1:54.87), while Palm won the diving event (197.4 points), Theo Bayne took a win in the 100 butterfly (1:01.50) and Cole Mattison-Gulotta nabbed first in the 200 free (2:17.10).

Late weekend results

Boys hockey

Amherst 6, Chicopee 0 — Six different Hurricanes players found the back of the net as they cruised to their second win over Chicopee this season.

Cooper Beckwith, Grahm Arguin, Benjamin Remensnyder, Jack Dyjach, Yuuki Ishida and Liam Flynn tallied goals while nine skaters recorded assists. Sophomore Jason Kim earned the shutout win in goal in his first start this season.

Easthampton 2, Agawam 1 — Eagles goalie Paige Galpin snagged 23 saves on 24 shots that came her way, and Mikey Thompson’s goal stood as the game winner to improve Easthampton to 8-3 this season.

Zach Roy was credited with the assist on the Thompson goal, and Anthony Torchia found the back of the net for  the Eagles’ first goal.

Wrestling

East Longmeadow 54, South Hadley 28 — Patrick Lavelle (113, major decision), Logan Luis (138,  pin) and Roberto Melendez (285, pin) earned individual victories for the Tigers.

East Longmeadow 49, Frontier 21 — Ben Calhoun (106, decision), Konnor James (150, pin) and Javion Cabrera (285, pin) picked up wins for  the Redhawks.

Girls basketball

South Hadley 47, Pope Francis 36 — The Tigers’ aggressive defense shut down Pope Francis’ offense, including its best player Isabella Meadows (season-low six points), to help them to their fifth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon.

Drew Alley had a team- high 10 points, Kate Phillips and Caitlin Dean each had eight, and Cara Dean added seven in the win for South Hadley.

Palmer 54, Belchertown 26 — Three Panthers scoring 14-plus points – including 21 from Vanessa Baer – was too much for the Orioles to overcome during Friday night’s loss.

Belchertown’s Aubrey McCain recorded a team-high 13 points while Chloe LaRoche an d Morghan Litz each chipped in fiv e points apiece.

Boys swimming

Belchertown 98, Minnechaug 72 — The Orioles remained undefeated on Friday night, defeating the Falcons behind four first-place events from Luke Giguere (400 freestyle relay, 100 breaststroke (1:03.60), 200 freestyle (1:51.44) and 200 medley relay)  and JR Zlogar (400 freestyle relay, 100 butterfly (56.74), 200 individual medley (2:09.26), 200 medley relay).

Ryan Shea was also a part  of both winning relays for Belchertown (3:31.53 in the 400 freestyle relay, 1:42.52 in the 200 medley relay), and he came in first in the 50 freestyle (23.10) as well.

Girls swimming

Minnechaug 121, Belchertown 46 — Aubrey Harrington finished first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:01.50 as the lone event winner for  the Orioles.

Cheri Willems and Valerie Williams each had strong days in the pool, combining for eight top-3 finishes between the two of them.

Williston results

Girls basketball

Hotchkiss 58, Williston 25 — Skyler Walker (12 points) and Kat Mayer (eight points) combined for 20 of the Wildcats’ 25 points in the loss. Williston kept it within striking distance in the first half, but Hotchkiss pulled away for a comfortable win in the second.

Boys basketball

Williston 65, Avon 55 — The Wildcats picked up a huge Class A road victory over Avon behind 20 big points from Wyatt Dunn. Ricardo Nieves added 14 points as well in the win for Williston.

Boys hockey

Williston 7, Wilbraham 0 — Six different Wildcats players tallied a goal as they went on the road to hand Wilbraham a blowout loss over the weekend.

It was a true team effort from top to bottom. Jake Henry earned the shutout win in goal for Williston.

Boys squash

Williston 4, Avon 3; Williston 6, Canterbury 1 — Eddie Howell won a five-set thriller to clinch the win against Avon, and Sebastian Enriquez put forth a strong effort in a sweep at No. 6 singles against Can terbury as Williston went undefeated over the weekend.

Girls squash

Ethel Walker 5, Williston 3 — Every individual match was competitive, but Williston fell to Ethel Walker 5-3. Zoe Zhang, Olivia Zaiken, and Isabel Sorkin-Camacho won their matches for the Wildcats with strong serves to the corner that their opponents struggled to return.
