High schools: Frontier’s Olivia Machon tosses no-hitter in win over Smith Academy

Olivia Machon didn’t allow a hit, as the Frontier Regional softball team took down Smith Academy 23-1 in five innings Thursday. She struck out nine and walked three in the circle while driving in five runs on two hits including a homer, scoring three runs.

Skyler Steele doubled twice among her three hits and scored three runs for the Redhawks. Frontier’s Roz Schempp, in her first varsity start at catcher, drove in four runs with three hits. Emilie Candelaria added two RBIs.

Haley Springman drew two walks and scored Smith Academy’s run.

Holyoke 23, Palmer 9 — Kylie Blaha doubled and singled with four RBIs and scored four runs. Jaycalee Santos also touched home four times and was a homer short of the cycle among her five hits. Janiya Lagoy added four hits and four RBIs with a double for the Purple Knights.

Baseball

Minnechaug 11, Northampton 1 (5) — Caleb Steineger singled twice, while Wes Parent added a hit for the Blue Devils.

The Falcons scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first.

Drury 10, Smith Academy 0 (5) — Cam Graves (stolen base) and Garret Willard each singled and drew a walk for the Falcons.

Smith Vocational 21, Pathfinder 0 (5) – The Vikings poured on 13 runs in the the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game to bed.

Summer on Strong kicks off Wednesday in Northampton

Rosco Palmer had three hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs for Smith Vocational.

Smith Vocational’s Tyler Carlson (two runs) and Marshall Ingram (three runs) each doubled and posted three RBIs.

Girls lacrosse

Wahconah 12, Belchertown 11 — Sam Pacunas put in eight goals and an assist, but the Orioles couldn’t take down the Warriors.

Paige Magner, Michelle Zaluga and Madysen Lepage (two goals) each distributed two assists.

Belchertown’s Grace Filippelli and McKenzie LePage each contributed a goal and an assist.

Pope Francis 12, Granby 11 –  Ella Laliberte’s nine goals weren’t enough for the Rams in a tight home loss.

Granby’s Ava Elizabeth Loughman and Mylin Laliberte each posted a goal and an assist, while Kelly Lynne Kennedy and Kalli White added one assist each.

Faith Ramos saved three shots for Granby.

Boys tennis

Frontier 3, Palmer 2 — Brayden Reipold’s varsity debut at No. 1 doubles clinched the Redhawks victory. He and Jacob Han lost Set 1 against Shane Normoyle and Kawan Freeman 7-6 but responded with a 6-3 win in the second and took the match 6-2 in the third.

Frontier No. 1 singles player Miles Keefe bested Aiden Szenda 6-0, 6-4, and Caiden Manning won 6-2, 6-1 over Donovan Bayleonard at No. 3 singles.

PVCICS 4, West Springfield 1 — Hugo Shinn knocked off previously unbeaten Syed Bukhario 6-0, 6-0 for the Dragons at No. 1 singles.

Asa Taggert took down Salim Madjidov 6-3, 6-2 playing singles for the first time in his PVCICS career at No. 3.

The Dragons’ No. 1 doubles team of Derek and Devan Ye won 6-3, 6-2 against Theo Dor and Cooper Murphy.

The No. 2 doubles position went to PVCICS on a forfeit.

Girls tennis

Northampton 3, Westfield 2 — The Blue Devils weathered a lack of a second doubles team to win at home. Dana Warren took down Lauren Bilodeau 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Ursula Von Goeler bested Jillian Battles 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Blue Devils’ top doubles pair of Annalisa Agliati and Summer Sorenson won 6-2, 6-2 against Ali Masciadrelli and Nora Scott.

Turners Falls 3, Frontier 2 – The Redhawks’ singles depth wasn’t enough at home. Hashini Ratnatunge prevailed over Maria Labglue at No. 2 singles when Labglue retired in the second set after a 6-3 Ratnatunge victory in the first.

At No. 3, Frontier’s Thanushi Ratnatunge beat Alyssa Corbin 6-2, 6-1.

Boys volleyball

Agawam 3, Belchertown 1 – Gabriel Ibekilo and Connor White each notched six kills, an ace and a block in the Orioles 25-11, 22-25, 25-8, 25-11 loss.

Rainer Kristensen distributed 11 assists with two kills for Belchertown.

Frontier 3, Duggan 0 — Aleks Carey delivered nine aces for the Redhawks in a 25-6, 25-12, 25-20 road victory.

Frontier’s William Petrin put down five kills, and Brady Burch (Four aces) added four. Jesse Kurkulonis distributed eight assists with four assists and two kills, while Tavo Vincent-Warner added seven assists.

Girls ultimate

Northampton 12, Northfield Mount Hermon 5 — Nola Busansky scored three goals and threw two for the Blue Devils in a road win. Northampton’s Olive Polson-Filas threw three assists, and Clare Kurtzman found the end zone twice.
