High schools: Granby softball rallies back to beat Smith Vocational

The Granby softball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, only to watch visiting Smith Vocational take an 11-10 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Rams rallied however, plating a pair of runs to walk off with a wild 12-11 victory on Friday in Granby.

Kaitlyn Curran (two runs) and Cassie Flaherty (RBI, three runs) had two hits apiece to pace the Rams, while Grace Roy tripled and scored twice while Mabel Carillon added a hit and two RBIs.

Amherst 2, Westfield Tech 1 — Sofia Holden struck out a whopping 15 batters, and the Hurricanes scored the only runs they’d need in the bottom of the first inning en route to a tight victory on Friday.

Holden went all seven innings, allowing six hits and three walks. Steph Barton had two hits and drove in both runs for Amherst.

Pioneer 11, Northampton 7 — Sasha Rodriguez, Jayda Alejandro, and Caroline Riordon each collected two hits for Northampton.

Pelis went seven innings in the circle, striking out six and walking six. Rodriguez and Giada Mason each drove in two runs, and Alejandro stole four bases.

Belchertown 15, Palmer 8 — Laura Cote, Olivia Lafayette and Lila Roy all had two hits as the Orioles handled Palmer on Friday.

Natalie Rose drew four walks and stole nine bases for Belchertown. Valerie Williams had a big two-out base hit in the bottom of the fourth to give Belchertown a lead it would not relinquish.

Lila Roy went the distance in the circle, striking out 12.

Westfield 4, Hampshire 0
Hampshire 15, Pope Francis 1 —
The Raiders split a doubleheader in Westfield on Friday, closing out their regular season with an 11-7 record.

Girls lacrosse

Northampton 15, Hampshire 8 — Imanni Power-Greene and Olivia Wright netted four goals apiece, and the Blue Devils took care of business on Friday night in Northampton.

Teagan McDonald added a hat trick and Olivia Busone scooped up four ground balls while Makayla Fydenkevez led the way with five draw controls.

Hampshire’s Anna Puttick put home five goals for the visitors.

South Hadley 18, Granby 7 — Four goals from Emili Piligian powered the Tigers, while Raquel Losty added a hat trick in the victory.

Ava Asselin and Rachel Yabra scored twice apiece, and Riley Nestor turned away six shots.

Boys tennis

Belchertown 4, Quaboag 1 — The Orioles doubled their win total from 2023, moving to 14-4 to cap a solid regular season.

Trevor Weiss (6-2, 6-4) and Luke Dudek (6-4, 6-2) were singles winners for Belchertown. Cam Kaczowka and Tyler Burrows scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 pairing of Jake Gormely and Mason Pobieglo notched a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 3, Northampton 2 — Singles wins from Ava Shea (No. 1 – 6-1, 6-0) and Anna Stamp (No. 2 – 6-3, 6-3) helped the Orioles to a tight win over Northampton on Friday.

Kasey Gibbons and Mia Corish were 6-2, 6-3 winners at No. 1 doubles for Belchertown. Northampton’s Bess King-Pollet won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and the second doubles pairing of Emmi Warren and Margaux Galvin notched a 6-3, 6-3 win for the Devils.

Boys volleyball

Granby 3, Sci-Tech 1 — Michael Swanigan put down 18 kills to go with 11 assists as the Rams earned a 25-20 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory on Friday.

Braeden Gallagher added eight kills and six digs for Granby, while Jake Gagnon had 20 assists and six kills in the win.

South Hadley 3, Baystate 1 — The Tigers received 11 kills and five blocks from Connor Racine-Rocheleau in a victory on Friday.

Jonathan Grim (8 kills, 5 aces), Beau Briere (6 kills, 9 digs) and Junoon Gridhar (22 assists, 7 aces) also had big nights for South Hadley.

Central 3, Belchertown 1 — Shea MacLean and Noah Yankson combined for 13 kills, while Rainer Kristensen racked up 17 assists for the Orioles in a four-set loss on Friday.

Baseball

Smith Voc 5, SICS 1 — James Lavallee struck out 11 in a complete-game outing, lifting the Vikings to a key win on Friday.

Patrick Millin, Lavallee and Jared Baer all had two hits for Smith Voc, which scored twice in the second inning and didn’t trail the rest of the way.

Frontier 7, Mahar 0 — Tyler Cusson, Wyatt Edes and Max Skribiski-Banack combined to hold the Senators to just one hit, with the Redhawks scoring five in the sixth to pull away with an independent win in South Deerfield Friday. 

Rosco Palmer singled, doubled and drove in two runs, Cusson tallied a hit and an RBI while Nico Fasulo hit safely in the win. 

Wahconah 12, Amherst 0 — Aryeh Rubinstein tossed four innings of relief for Amherst, striking out two and walking three. Neil Cunniffe added a hit for the Canes.
