Chicopee man arraigned in Walmart bathroom shooting in Hadley

NORTHAMPTON – A Chicopee man pleaded not guilty in Hampshire District Court Tuesday to seven charges related to an Aug. 22 shooting that seriously injured two teenagers in the bathroom at the Walmart store in Hadley.

Wilmer Alvarez-Vargas, 26, was indicted Nov. 4 by a Hampshire grand jury on two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Hampshire Superior Court Judge Richard Carey continued the case until Nov. 23 for a dangerousness hearing, which will determine whether Alvarez-Vargas will be held pending trial. Alvarez-Vargas has been in custody since the shooting incident after being ordered held as dangerous following his arrest and arraignment in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown.

Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Suhl represented the state in its prosecution of Alvarez-Vargas, while the defendant was represented by Nikolas Andreopoulos.

The shooting victims, Juan Hernandez, 18, of Schenectady, New York, and Jeruan Matos Colon, 19, of Springfield, have been indicted by a Hampshire grand jury for charges stemming from the same incident.

Hernandez was indicted on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. He pleaded not guilty in Hampshire Superior Court on Nov. 9. His bail was set by the court at $2,500.

Matos Colon was indicted on charges of possession with intent to distribute a Class A substance, heroin, and possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, cocaine. He is scheduled to be arraigned in the Hampshire Superior Court on Nov. 23.

District court charges against a co-defendant in the case, Keyla Fernandez, 32, of Holyoke, have been dismissed.
