High schools: Northampton baseball erupts for 15 hits in win over Chicopee

Luke McGrath and Ben Sledzieski drove in three runs each, as the Northampton baseball team handled Chicopee 13-3 in five innings at home.

The Blue Devils amassed 15 hits and scored in every inning.

Northampton’s Kelvin Perez amassed three hits and two RBIs.

Pete Sullivan struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings. Jack Sherman made his varsity debut in relief.

Belchertown 5, Westfield Tech 2 — Joey Mankowski drove in two runs for the Orioles in a road win. Aidan Torna doubled and added an RBI for Belchertown.

Belchertown’s Derek Gould and Tyler McDonald had an RBI each.

Brady Perkins earned the win allowing just three hits with four strikeouts for Belchetown. He walked six.

Jake Waller struck out five in two innings of relief.

Mohawk Trail 8, Smith Academy 7 — Ryan Belina singled three times and drove in a run for the Falcons. Jake Wilcox also had three hits and scored a run. Smith Academy’s Griffin Smiarowski doubled with two RBIs, while Griffin Goldman registered a triple among his two hits. The Falcons’ Isaak Baranoski had a single and an RBI.

Softball

Easthampton 12, Northampton 2 (6) — Lauren Morse homered and doubled twice among her four hits, driving in two runs for the Eagles. Abby McClaflin (two RBIs) and Megan Fickett (three RBIs) each tripled twice for Easthampton.

Eagles pitcher Sophia Faginski struck out three and allowed just two hits. She needed just 51 pitches.

Easthampton’s Haley Routher and Kayley Downie drove in two runs each.

Northampton’s Kaliya Valentin and Matea Hernandez each singled once.

Hopkins Academy 22, Mahar 0 (5) — Talor Barry (triple) and Layni Bailey (double) each had three hits and two RBIs, as the Golden Hawks rolled to their sixth consecutive victory.

Cassie Dion and Izzy Palmisano each singled twice, and Lily Ellia singled once for Hopkins Academy, who plated 14 in the third.

Hopkins Academy pitcher Cassie Dion struck out eight and allowed just one hit.

Amherst 8, Pope Francis 5 — Sofia Holden went the distance in the circle,throwing seven innings and striking out 12 while her sister Nina led the team with two hits, one RBI and three runs. 

Sofia Holden plated twice, Grace Johnson notched two hits and Maria Konieczny had one RBI and one run in the win. 

Boys lacrosse

Smith Vocational 11, St. Mary’s 9 – Alex Maritnez scored five goals with an asisst, as the Vikings prevailed at home. Jake Adams contributed a hat trick and two assists for Smith Vocational.

Ty Chapdelaine and John Majewski had a goal and two assists each. Chad Hockenberry contributed a goal and an assist, while Henry Harrison chipped in an assist. Wyatt Evans saved 11 shots.

Boys tennis

Longmeadow 5, Amherst 0 — The Hurricanes took two matches to a third set but couldn’t scratch the Lancres.

Miles Jeffries fell 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 against Tommy McMahon at No. 1 singles, while Longmeadow’s Richard Li defeated Elias Katsaros 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.

Northampton 5, East Longmeadow 0 — Blue Devils No. 3 singles player Durrell Patrick survived a three-set battle with Francesco Mancuso 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 to finish of the sweep.

Northampton’s Reilly Fowles took down Lukas deBlok 7(7)-6(3), 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Max Cahhilane won 6-1, 6-4 against Jack Langan.

At No. 1 doubles, twins Aidan and Ethan Metz handled Samuel Sares and Jack Serafini 6-3, 6-2, while Maitreya Abend and Reed O’Connor fell behind 0-6 in set 1 before rallying 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against William Beagle and Benjamin Luu.

PVCICS 4, Valley View 1 – All three of PVCICS’ singles won their matches, as did No. 1 doubles pair Gabe Loinaz and Asa Taggert (6-4, 6-2). 

Both No. 1 singles Hugo Shinn and No. 2 singles Aidan Cleary won their matches 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 singles Clayton English needed one additional game in a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Girls tennis

Ludlow 3, Belchertown 2 – Ava Shea won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Orioles over Ashlyn Keatings.

At No. 1 doubles, Belchertown’s Katie Collins and Kasey Gibbons won 6-3, 6-3 over India Iwaniec and Shealee Cavanaugh.

Frontier 3, Greenfield 2 — The Redhawks took all three singles matches to earn a win over the Green Wave at the Davis Street Courts on Tuesday.

Sydney Scanlon earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles, Maddie Powers took No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-4 against Mireb Gheorghita and Hashini Ratnatunge defeated Jessica Mihailicenco by a score of 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles for Frontier.

Agawam 3, South Hadley 2 – South Hadley No. 1 Esther Ngure prevailed in two tight sets 7-6, 7-6 over Olivia Gryszowka. The Tigers No. 1 doubles squad of Rylee Suchenicz and Sarah Cormier won 6-2, 6-4 against Isabella Garcia and Kristen Vinciguerra.

PVCICS 3, Palmer 2 — Elisa Shinn led the way for the Dragons with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hannah Hoang at No. 1 singles.

PVCICS’ Christina Heiney bested Jenna Ghrear 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Rachel Gao prevailed 6-1, 6-1 against Adrianna Roberts at No. 3 singles.
