Kay Metcalfe of Plainfield celebrated her 105th birthday Nov. 15.

She lives with her daughter, Susan LaRock.

Born in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1912, Kay is a graduate of the College of Wooster in Ohio and Parsons Art and Design School in New York City. She also spent two years in Paris studying art.

She married Tristan Metcalfe in 1938. They lived in New York, where she worked at the Yonkers Public Library for 25 years. She made and set up displays for the library theme of the month.

Metcalfe first came to Plainfield in 1924 when her parents bought a cabin on Windsor Pond. In 1947 they purchased the farmhouse where Metcalfe now lives. She has been living full time in Plainfield since 1996. During that time she perfected her artistic talent by stenciling trays. She was active and independent well into her 90s, drawing, painting and attending the Plainfield Church weekly.

She says her secret to long life is eating ice cream.
