NORTHAMPTON — The notorious “truck eating bridge” downtown has claimed another victim.

Police were called to the site of the railroad bridge, which crosses over Bridge Street between Hawley Street and Strong Avenue, at 8:22 a.m. Wednesday.

A tractor-trailer truck struck the bridge, ripping off some of the trailer’s roof in a manner akin to a lid coming off a tin can.

Jim Jackewich of Red’s Towing helped extricate the vehicle.

“We separated the unit underneath the bridge,” Jackewich said. “We got lucky because the trailer was empty.”

In addition to Northampton Police and Red’s Towing, Pan Am Railways and the State Police also had people on the scene.

Last month, another tractor-trailer struck the bridge, and it also was hit in June.
