HOLYOKE — A stovetop fire displaced one resident in a South Holyoke apartment building on Saturday.

The Holyoke Fire Department responded to the 569 South Canal St. complex after receiving a report of smoke coming out of the building. Firefighters found a fire on the stovetop of a first-floor apartment, which had spread to cabinets and ceilings in the kitchen.

“The fire was quickly extinguished and contained to one apartment, which had extensive smoke and water damage,” Holyoke Fire Capt. Kevin Cavagnac said in a statement. “No injuries were reported.”

Cavagnac said that a fire investigator determined that “unattended cooking” was the cause of the fire.

“The Fire Prevention Bureau wants to emphasize the importance of not leaving a pan unattended on the stove,” he said.

The building owner housed the displaced resident in a nearby vacant apartment, Cavagnac said.
