UMass freshman guard Sean East II announced his intention to transfer on Thursday.

East tweeted: “First, I would like to thank GOD for this opportunity, because without him, none of this would have been possible.

“Secondly, I would like to thank Coach McCall and the coaching staff for the opportunity to play for this University.

“Thirdly, I would like to shout out to my teammates and close friends that helped me make through this year! Without them I don’t know if I would of made it.

“Lastly, I would like to thank the fans and the UMass community for all the support.

“UMass, it’s been real, but with that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal.

East started the first 18 games of the season, then came off the bench for the next 11. He started the last two games of the regular season for UMass (14-17, 8-10 Atlantic 10), which was scheduled to play VCU in the second round of the conference tournament before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

East averaged 9.3 points and 2.5 rebounds over 28.1 minutes per game. The 6-foot-3 Louisville native was one of five players to appear in every game.

East’s decision to leave comes on the heels of Mattapoisett native Noah Fernandes’ verbal commitment to the Minutemen. The Wichita State freshman guard announced on Twitter earlier this month that he will join the Minutemen.

Fernandes played for current UMass assistant coach Tony Bergeron at Woodstock Academy.

East becomes the third player to leave the program since the abrupt end of the season, joining C.J. Jackson and Keon Clergeot.
