HOLYOKE — Two students who attend Holyoke High School North were arrested Monday after they were found in possession of weapons, according to the school district.
In a release, the school said that at around 1 p.m. one of the students was caught vaping, a violation of school rules, and that a subsequent search of their possessions found dangerous items. School Resource Officer Manny Rivera was contacted, and he determined that a second student was also carrying dangerous items.
Among the items were a machete, several types of ammunition, brass knuckles, knives and a hammer. No firearms were found.
Both students were arrested but have not been identified. They are facing school discipline and legal charges, according to the school.
“We have trained our staff extensively in keeping our schools safe,” Superintendent Anthony Soto said in a statement. “And while we never want situations like this to occur, we are very grateful that today our extensive training proved highly effective. We also appreciate the quick response by Officer Rivera at the scene, as well as the ongoing investigation being conducted by Holyoke Police at this time.”
