SUNDERLAND — No injuries resulted from a barn fire at 262 South Silver Lane on Sunday, but the structure was declared a total loss with $50,000 in estimated damage.

According to Sunderland Fire Chief Steven Benjamin, the fire was reported at 7:12 p.m. When he arrived on scene, he found a fully involved fire consuming a three-sided barn. The barn was used to store hay, and there were no animals inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Benjamin said.

Multiple fire departments from both Franklin and Hampshire counties were dispatched for mutual aid, including South Deerfield, Montague Center, Whately, Greenfield, Hadley and Leverett. Amherst EMS and South County EMS also responded.

According to Benjamin, the fire was doused with approximately 25,000 gallons of water. Crews had to work to not only quell the fire but protect the brush and wooded area around the barn from any fire extension, he said. The fire was under control by 7:46 p.m.
