Monday’s high schools: Northampton’s Stephan Johnson falls in WMass individual tennis final

Northampton freshman Stephan Johnson faced Longmeadow senior Will Chen for the third time Monday when the two met for the Western Massachusetts individual boys singles title.

Chen prevailed in all three. He beat Johnson 6-3, 6-1 on Monday to win his second individual sectional title in the past three years.

Johnson beat James Leone of Minnechaug 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. He bested Longmeadow’s Ashvin Babu 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Chen was the top overall seed, while Johnson was seeded second.

Northampton has already qualified for the boys team tournament. The Blue Devils will face Belchertown on the road Tuesday then will play Ludlow at Belchertown after to close the regular season. Tennis tournament seeds will be released Friday.


Hopkins Academy 4, Greenfield 3 — The bottom two spots in the Golden Hawks’ order combined for a 4-for-4 day with four runs scored.

Thea Hanscom went 2-for-2 with a run, while Braeden Tudryn doubled, and Liam Higgins singled.

Justin Butterfield had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. He struck out four in five innings for Hopkins Academy (12-4, 8-2 Hampshire West).

Palmer 10, South Hadley 4 — David Adams had a single and a double with three RBIs in a home loss.

Brendan Fogarty drove in the Tigers’ other run and walked twice.

Evan Levrault singled twice for South Hadley (6-13).
