It could be that I’ve shot four or five percent of Hopkins Academy’s 355 graduations. But I don’t recall ever seeing such a perfectly framed farm scene, a reminder of Hadley’s deep agricultural roots — no pun intended.

At many high school commencements, the gymnasium doubles as the auditorium and Hopkins always does it up right with blue and gold crepe paper streamers hung from center court out to the six basketball hoops, giving it the feel of an old-time cotillion. Though it wasn’t a particularly warm evening, the double doors on the west side of the gym were opened wide, offering both a light breeze and a glimpse into a livelihood that’s surely familiar, at least in some degree, to each of this year’s 53 graduates.

And today, Friday, we at the Gazette will engage in another not-quite-so-storied tradition as we cover the “pompocalypse” of seven graduations, almost a third of our season of local college and high school sendoffs, in one night.
