NORTHAMPTON — Amid drought conditions, residents are being asked to use water more sparingly.
Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., nonessential outdoor water use is banned in the city, the city announced Wednesday afternoon.
“Limiting water use, especially nonessential outdoor water use, is needed to ensure a sustainable water supply and to protect stream flow for aquatic life,” an announcement from the city reads.
The ban includes washing cars, unless at a commercial car wash, and watering lawns and gardens “except by means of a handheld hose outside the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.”
Violations of the ban can result in fees of $100 for a first violation and $200 for further violations, the city warned.
