‘March for Decency’ planned in Northampton for Jan. 21

NORTHAMPTON — Taking inspiration from a planned Women’s March on Washington scheduled for Jan. 21, a Northampton woman has organized a similar march in town that same day.

“This is especially intended for people who may not be able to travel,” said Molly Snyder, the organizer of the Northampton March for Decency. This particularly includes the elderly and people with disabilities who need to ride in cars.

The Northampton march is set for Jan. 21, at 11:30 a.m., and will march at noon from Sheldon Field to City Hall.

Both the Washington and Northampton marches are primarily concerned with the rights of women, minorities and LGBTQ+ Americans — the Washington march’s mission statement reads “In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore.”

Snyder said the Northampton march, in particular, is about ensuring everyone is treated with the respect and decency they deserve.

“It’s a march for decency,” she said. “It’s not a march to trash any figure or behavior.”

Though it’s called a march, Snyder said cars are encouraged, especially for those whose age or disability prevents them from walking a mile. However, signs on cars are not permitted to block windows.

Snyder said she works as an assisted living activities director, and had trouble finding a local event for the people she works with, who can’t travel to the Washington event or walk longer distances.

“These people are in their 90s,” she said. “When I couldn’t find one, I decided to create one. As an activities director, I try not to make it all about bingo. I try to make it real, and this is one way to make it real.”
