NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton High School Democrats recently received national recognition for their work. Last week, the High School Democrats of America named the group the local chapter of the year.

“It was so fulfilling to hear our chapter called to be recognized for the award because it legitimizes the hard work each member does,” Tadea Martin-Gonzalez, co-chair of the group, said in a statement.

The High School Democrats of America consists of 400 local chapters across the country, according to Talat Aman, the former vice chairman of the national organization.

Local groups testify for bills and help voters register.

“Northampton really stood out because they’ve been doing that at one of the highest levels of all our chapters in the country,” Aman said Sunday evening.

He added that he was impressed with their work on a protest of Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court and a walkout to support the Northampton Association for School Employees amid stalled contract negotiations.

Aman commended the group for its active membership. “A lot of our chapters in HSDA we have specific individuals that lead the chapter. Northampton has this great way of getting everyone involved,” he said.

Cherilyn Strader, a recently graduated senior who served as a leader of the Northampton group, commented on the award in a statement.

“It’s humbling to know the work our chapter has done will leave a mark both on our school community and the larger community of high school Democrats,” she said.
