Zoey Mordecai, Jack Long and Tyler Sproehnle: Students appreciate state flag editorial

We would like to thank you for your April 27 editorial (“Time for Legislature to study outdated state seal, flag). The issue of having an offensive Massachusetts state flag is a big one, and we are glad that it is receiving the publicity that it deserves.

White supremacy in the flag of the commonwealth is never a good thing, and we are delighted that this problem is being brought to light. Our class is organizing a campaign around this issue as part of our civic literacy unit.

We have contacted media, had a radio segment, held a panel on youth activism and done outreach to other students around the state. The timing is truly perfect to change the flag, as the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower arriving is coming up in 2020.

We as a sixth-grade class are working on changing this violent symbol, and we are thankful for any and all good publicity, as we believe that positive coverage will make all the difference in our efforts. Thank you again for this excellent editorial.
