Monday’s colleges: Amherst shoots down Westfield State, 84-48

The Amherst College men’s basketball team came out shooting and put away Westfield State.

The Mammoths made 8 of 9 opening 3-pointers en route to an 84-48 victory, Monday in Westfield.

Amherst (3-0) led 52-20 at halftime after shooting 60.6 percent from the floor. Meanwhile, the Mammoths defense held the Owls to 18.5 percent shooting in the first half.

Johnny McCarthy had a game-high 18 points, while Michael Riopel added 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tim McCarthy added 10 points off the bench.

Women’s swimming

Amherst 170, Wesleyan 115 — Natalie Rumpelt won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.02) and the 100 free (52.99), and teamed with Stephanie Moriarty, Nina Fitzgerald and Geralyn Lam to win the 200 medley relay as the Mammoths (2-0) won on the road.

Maela Whitcomb (Northampton) won the 50 butterfly (26.45) and the 100 individual medley (1:03.64).

Men’s swimming

Amherst 161, Wesleyan 126 — Kou Li (200 free, 100 free), Craig Smith (50 backstroke, 100 back) and Elijah Spiro (50 breaststroke, 100 breast) were each double winners as the Mammoths won on the road.

Aidan Winn (Florence) was second in the 500 free and swam the third leg on Wesleyan’s winning 400 free relay.
