Links some misbehavior to abuse as child

I am concerned that in our haste to attribute every case of sexual abuse to our American culture of male domination, we are overlooking the possibility that occasionally that behavior is a result of acting out one’s own abuse as a child.

Yes, we have to address every instance of harmful behavior, but not necessarily in the same way. Perhaps we might begin to discriminate between actions based on the culture of male power over women, and actions resulting from early traumatic experiences, which require therapy of some kind.

As a matter of fact, the training little boys receive in order to grow into adult men that dominate women is in itself rather traumatic, as is the training little girls receive to acquiesce and submit. Patriarchy is not “natural” — it is taught.

It’s inevitable that in the early stages of any kind of big social disruption, there is minimal attention to more subtle variations in behavior. Eventually, I suspect we will arrive at a more sensitive investigation into this plague of exploitation.
