LUDLOW — Despite a mistake-prone performance, Belchertown found itself in a one-score football game in the waning minutes of the final quarter.

But Jeremy Garcia broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run with 73 seconds remaining to spark Ludlow to a 20-6 triumph over Belchertown, that effectively took the Orioles out of contention for a postseason berth.

“We’re out,” Belchertown coach Ed Wyzik said. “The kids worked hard and never gave up.”

Belchertown fell to 3-4 overall, 2-4 Intercounty South after consecutive losses to playoff bound Lee and Ludlow. A win against Ludlow could have kept Belchertown in the mix.

Ludlow had wins over two teams (Mount Greylock and Amherst) that Belchertown lost to, and had the Orioles beaten the Lions, the playoffs could have been very much in the picture.

But untimely penalties and some costly turnovers doomed the Orioles.

“We shot ourselves in the foot with those penalties,” Wyzik said.

Injuries to running back Brad Lovett and tight end Matt Fournier left the Orioles with the inability to create a balanced offensive attack.

“We’re a running team and we were forced to throw,” Wyzik said.

The Ludlow pass rush was too much for the Belchertown offensive line. The Lions forced quarterback John Flink out of the pocket all night and virtually eliminated the Orioles’ passing game.

Flink (3 of 9, 53 yards) did throw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Joey Douillard with 7:36 remaining. That made it 14-6.

“I thought we were going to score a touchdown and get a 2-point conversion,” Wyzik said.

Ludlow’s defense came up big later in the game. The Lions had a pair of sacks to end one promising drive and another was foiled with a interception.

“Our line’s been struggling,” Wyzik said.

Ludlow (5-2, 4-1) moved to a 14-0 need after Carson Kowalski caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Fogg with 3:13 left in the third quarter.

Belchertown made it a one-score game after Douillard caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Flink with 7:36 left, but Garcia’s touchdown run with 1:13 left iced the game for Ludlow.
