Sue Donaldson: Pitch in on climate fight

Published: 9/20/2021 2:42:22 PM

If columnist Marty Nathan (“Hope — yes, hope — for our planet,” Sept 2) can feel hopeful about climate, we all can too.

As a wise person once said, hope isn’t an emotion; it’s a choice. But to choose hope, we also need to choose action. And that can mean many things. As Nathan says, we can “put on our citizen lobbyist hats” to pass the infrastructure bills. But we can also pressure financial institutions (hello, TD and Bank of America) to stop funding Line 3 and other new fossil fuel infrastructure; we can petition the New York Times to stop carrying ads for fossil fuel companies; and we can join the Springfield Climate Justice Coalition in fighting the proposed new Eversource pipeline in Springfield.

To find out how to pitch in, join one of our local climate organizations. With just a few minutes a day, we can put our hope to work.
