Nicholas Howe: Police union’s move is ‘tone-deaf’

Northampton’s police union is in the news for attempting to reverse recent budget cuts to the department. Even granted that unions exist to fight for their members’ jobs, in the current moment, the move seems tone-deaf at best.

Imagine if we had police unions that took the long view by leading in the fight for social justice. Union leaders would stop pushing for policies that shield those accused of abuses. Rank-and-file members would individually pledge to speak out against biased policing, and put the public interest ahead of protecting their buddies.

It is the right thing to do, and demonstrating that union members want good policing as much as anyone is a far better way to ensure their long-term job security. Imagine that.
