Letter Johanna Halbeisen: Unanswered questions

The story about the cancellation of the art exhibit leaves me with a lot of questions. I’m curious about what the Arts Council’s goals are going forward and what their next steps might be.

Institutions like the Arts Council need to reevaluate how their existing practices are perpetuating biases that ignore many people. I can understand Jason Montgomery’s concern about something that might imply that Indigenous people no longer exist. Invisibility of Indigenous people is a serious longstanding problem.

I am curious if Jason Montgomery is interested in working with the Arts Council on effective ways to reach out to local Indigenous artists and other artists who might be missing. If not, can the Arts Council find other Indigenous artists to help them? Is he interested in a dialog with nonIndigenous artists?

I’m curious if artist Doris Madsen is interested in a dialog with Indigenous artists. And I wonder if the council can find someone with the skill to facilitate such a dialog so that both Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists are heard and respected.
