At age 13 my son fractured three vertebrae in his back and spent the summer in a body cast. His dad built a table with arm cutouts so he could practice with the swim team. He chipped and putted in the back yard for hours every day. While still in the cast he played in a golf tournament and finished third. The day after the cast came off he swam exhibition in 17 and under and was 2 seconds off his best time.

Use this time out from your daily routine to practice a skill, clean out the junk drawer, closet and garage. Pick up some trash in front of your house, weed a neighbor’s garden, knit a hat to donate.

At 82, I’m writing letters and chopping in the yard.
