HOLYOKE — The Gazette has teamed up with the League of Women Voters of Northampton Area to hold candidate forums for those running for at-large City Council seats and for mayor in Holyoke.

The first forum will feature candidates running for the six available at-large seats on the Holyoke City Council. It will take place on Oct. 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event will be live-streamed on Holyoke Media and available for viewing on channel 12 in Holyoke.

There are currently 11 candidates running for those seats: incumbents Peter Tallman, James Leahy, Joseph McGiverin and Howard Greaney, as well as challengers Kevin Jourdain, Israel Rivera, Jose Luis Maldonado Velez, Mark Chatel, Jennifer Keitt, Tessa Murphy-Romboletti and Paola Ferrario.

The mayoral candidate forum will take place Oct. 26 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. It too will be available on Holyoke Media, though only after Oct. 26. Those wishing to watch the forum live will have to do so using Zoom. Preregistration is required at the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ADTcHFQNRZOAYubsQDWZ1A. After registering, a Zoom link will be sent that can be used to join the live forum.

A preliminary election on Sept. 21 narrowed the mayoral field from seven candidates down to two: Blandford Town Manager Joshua Garcia and At-large City Councilor Michael Sullivan.

Members of the public can submit questions for the candidates on the League of Women Voters’ website — lwvnorthamptonarea.org — by clicking on “contact us.” To avoid confusion, messages should include the forum date, the city, and whether it is for the City Council or mayoral forum. Those with questions are asked to address them to all candidates.

The city’s election will take place on Nov. 2, with early voting beginning in City Hall on Monday, Oct. 25, and continuing throughout that week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The last day to register to vote for the election is Oct. 13.
