NORTHAMPTON – A Holyoke man is being held on bail after allegedly assaulting a couple who told him to use a grocery store bathroom instead of urinating in public.

Sean T. Donahoo, 49, of Holyoke, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Northampton District Court to charges of indecent exposure, assault and battery, assault and battery to intimidate, and a subsequent offense of disorderly conduct.

Northampton Police were called to Big Y supermarket on North King Street shortly before 1:30 p.m. for a report of a fight in progress.

The incident began after a man and a woman saw Donahoo urinating on the lawn area near the store, facing in the direction of the grocery store’s parking lot. The couple told Donahoo there was a bathroom inside the store and he should use that, according to court documents. Donahoo was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Donahoo yelled at the couple, continued urinating in their direction and made no attempts to conceal himself, police said.

The couple kept walking to a nearby bus stop and were waiting there when Donahoo allegedly approached them and was “acting in a very aggressive manner,” Northampton Patrol Officer John McCarthy wrote in a report.

Donahoo allegedly punched the woman in the face and then kicked the man in his leg. Donahoo also called the man, who is black, a racial slur, McCarthy wrote.

When police arrived on scene, Donahoo was sitting on a bench near the store. Donahoo allegedly continued yelling at the man while police were on scene and at one point became belligerent before police arrested him, according to McCarthy’s report.

Donahoo is being represented by attorney Everald Henry. He is being held on $1,000 bail.
