HOLYOKE – Firefighters extinguished a blaze in a vacant apartment building at 27-29 Cabot St. early Friday morning.

The Holyoke Fire and Police departments responded to multiple 911 calls from the public at 7:30 a.m., reporting the fire, which was found in a first-floor unit with smoke visible from the windows of the floors above, according to the Holyoke Fire Department.

The room and contents of a single first-floor apartment were substantially damaged and fire crews were able to contain the fire to the original apartment, according to Fire Capt. Kevin Cavagnac.

The fire’s cause was investigated by an HFD fire investigator who determined that the fire originated in a mattress and trash on the floor of the apartment. Further investigation revealed that homeless people had been entering the building for some time, according to Cavagnac.

No injuries were reported.
