High School Roundup: Easthampton softball holds off late rally by Frontier

Frontier rattled off five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie Monday’s game 8-8, but with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Easthampton’s Lauren Morse stole home on a wild pitch to secure a wild 9-8 win over Frontier. 

Shortstop Abigail McClaflin led the team with four RBIs, smashing a grand slam in the second inning to give the Eagles an early 6-0 lead.

With the game-tying run on second base for Frontier, the Eagles safely caught a pop-up in the top of the seventh to secure the win. 

Easthampton’s Christine Raymond had a hit and plated twice and KayleyDownie and Megan Fickett both had a hit, a run and an RBI in the win. 

Pitcher Rosie Follet struck out three batters and allowed eight hits. 

Frontier’s Delaney Fifield had two hits, two RBIs and two runs and pitcher Olivia Machon struck out five and allowed seven hits in the loss. 

Monson 11, Granby 0 – Grace Roy and Quinlin Cook both recorded hits for the Rams, but nobody could score in a shutout loss. 

Pitcher Meredith Bartosz threw all seven innings, striking out one batter and shutting out Monson in the final three innings.

Hampshire 21, West Springfield 8 –  Ashley Cortis hit for the cycle for the Raiders in a blowout win over West Springfield, picking up a single, double, triple and home run and finished with five RBIs. CC Thayer added six RBIs and had a three-run homer and Ryanne Dubay went 3-for-4 with two RBIs of her own. 

Palmer 9, Holyoke 8 – Holyoke’s Jaycalee Santos had three hits, including a double, and two runs in a close loss to Palmer. Tryanna Ayala posted two RBIs and two hits and Isabella Murphy had two hits for the Purple Knights.

Pitcher Kylie Blaha threw all seven innings in the circle, striking out six batters and allowing nine hits. 

Hopkins Academy 19, Pioneer 1 (5) – Maggie Potter, Daisy Vendetti and Cassidi Mushenski all had two hits in a five-inning win. 

Kaelyn Zakaitis and Cassie Dion split time in the circle, allowing no hits between them and striking out seven and two batters, respectively. 

Smith Academy 23, Athol 16 – Down 12-5 after two innings, the Falcons’ bats woke up in the third, scoring 15 runs to storm back and secure the win. 

Smith Academy pitcher Keighley Gworek struck out five batters and also plated three runs. Haley Springman hit a pair of doubles and a triple, finishing with four RBIs and three runs, and Alexa Jagodzinski plated five times. Emilia Neves added three hits and five RBIs in the win. 

 South Hadley 16, Paulo Friere 1 (5) – Ara Powers went 4-for-4 at the plate while Erin Bullough and Jenna Bobrowski each had three hits and two RBIs. 

Isabella Schaeffer allowed no hits in five innings, striking out 15 and hitting one batter. 

SICS 12, Belchertown 7 - The Orioles took an early 5-0 lead but were outscored 12-2 in the last four innings. 

Lex Piwcio had one hit and three RBIs and Laura Cote had one hit and scored three runs. 

Cote pitched all seven innings, striking out four and walking eight. 

Baseball

Wahconah 2, Belchertown 1 – The Orioles outhit the Warriors 8-5 but couldn’t plate enough runs in a heartbreaking loss on Monday. 

Derek Gould had two hits, including a double, and Aiden Torna also doubled and scored Belchertown’s lone run. 

Belchertown pitcher Josh Misiaszek struck out nine batters and allowed one earned run in the loss. 

Amherst 3, Chicopee 1 – Chuck May went the distance, striking out seven batters to get the win for Amherst. 

All three of the Hurricanes’ runs came in the first inning, with Elijah and Arey Rubenstein combining for three RBIs. 

Frontier 13, Athol 3 (5) — Liam Skribiski-Banack continues to smash the ball at the plate for the Redhawks, knocking three hits that drove in four runs as Frontier earned a five-inning Suburban League West win over the Bears in South Deerfield on Monday.

Smith Vocational 12, Gateway 2 (5) – James Lavallee led the team with three hits and two runs and Caelan Finnie and Rosco Palmer had two hits and a run apiece in the Vikings win. 

Smith Voc pitcher Marshall Ingram earned the win with nine strikeouts, allowing just two hits. 

Gateway pitcher Rylie Heeter threw one inning, striking out one batter and allowing one hit; teammate Dalton Savoy threw 2⅓ innings and struck out one batter while Zander Hicks threw the remaining 1⅔ innings, striking out two. 

Smith Academy 5, Ludlow 2 – Logan Graves had two RBIs, a hit and a run and Griffin Smiarowski whacked a triple, two doubles and an RBI for the Falcons. 

Smiarowski and Harrison LaFlamme split time on the mound, with Smiarowski throwing 3⅔ innings and striking out six batters and LaFlamme throwing 3⅓ innings and allowing two hits. 

Pittsfield 10, Northampton 0 – Trey Rios got the Blue Devils’ lone hit in a shutout loss to Pittsfield. 

Marty Maslowski threw three innings, striking out four batters and allowing six earned runs. 

Hopkins Academy 17, Easthampton 2 – Cody West plated five runs and Cooper Beckwith and Patrick Fitzgibbons each scored three runs as the Falcons blew past Easthampton. 

Boys lacrosse

Amherst 13, Northampton 9 – Amherst won the Battle of the Bridge, led by Jameson Dion’s seven goals and goalie Max Frenette’s 18 saves. Linus Hazen added four goals in the win. 

Northampton’s Keller Mahoney (3G, 2A) and Minty Peterson (3G, 1A) both notched a hat trick in that loss. 

Girls lacrosse

Longmeadow 18, Northampton 0 – Northampton goalie Shea Riley made 13 saves in net against Longmeadow. 

Belchertown 14, Chicopee Comp 5 – Samantha Pacunas netted five goals and three assists and Adrien Wise had a hat trick and an assist for the Orioles. 

Boys tennis

Frontier 3, Turners Falls 2 – Both of the Redhawks’ doubles teams and their No. 3 singles Noah Nichols were the difference in a close match against Turners Falls. 

Nichols (6-1, 6-1) was the lone singles competitor to earn a win. No. 1 doubles pair Liam Wells and Xavier Fripp (6-1, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles pair Jarrod Isles and Benjamin Desmond (6-0, 6-0) also picked up wins for the Redhawks. 

Girls tennis

South Hadley 5, Central 0 – The Tigers swept Central on Monday, led by No. 2 singles Yanna Stefoglo (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles pair Sarah Cormier and Georgia Wall (6-0, 6-0), who were perfect in their matches. 

Also winning for South Hadley was No. 1 singles Rylee Suchenicz (6-1, 6-0) and No. 1 doubles pair Grace O’Shea and Maddie Bruso (6-0, 6-1).

The Tigers also won No. 3 singles by forfeit. 

PVCICS 3, Greenfield 2 – All three singles competitors won their matches to give the Dragons a win. 

No. 1 singles Elisa Shinn won in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), No. 2 singles Christina Heiney won her set (6-1, 6-4) and No. 3 Rachel Gao won a tight match (7-6, (8-6), 6-0) to complete the win. 

Minnechaug 5, Amherst 0 – The Hurricanes fell to 6-6 with a loss to Minnechaug on Monday. 

Girls track & field

Minnechaug 94.5, Amherst 50.5 – Elizabeth Sawicki was on fire for the ’Canes, winning four individual events. 

Sawicki placed first in the 400 hurdles (1:16.4), triple jump (30-11), high jump (4-4) and pole vault (8-0). Also earning multiple individual wins was Courtnegail Rose, who won the shot put (30-11.25) and the discus (80-1). 

Tamar Byl-Brann also won the two mile (12:17.2) for Amherst. 

Boys volleyball

Belchertown 3, Athol 1 – Rainer Kristensen tossed up 35 assists and three aces and Connor White had 15 kills in a four-set win over Athol (24-26, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17). 

Brian Burns had 10 kills and Ty Bogdanovich slammed down eight kills in the win. 

West Springfield 3, Frontier 1 – The Redhawks won a third set to force a fourth, but West Springfield muscled past them (18-25, 21-25, 25-20). 

Jack Carey and Jesse Kurkulonis had 10 kills each and Tavo Vincent-Warner tossed up 29 assists. Kurkulonis also led the team with 17 digs.
