High schools: Ava Shea, Belchertown girls tennis knock off Amherst (PHOTOS)

Ava Shea captured a back-and-forth match at first singles, helping the Belchertown girls tennis team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Amherst on Tuesday.

Shea held off Amherst’s Sofia DaSilva-Askew, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the top spot to propel the Orioles to their sixth win of the season (6-1 overall).

Amber Drummond followed at No. 2 singles for Belchertown, notching a 6-2, 6-2 win over Amherst’s Daniella Sherman.

Amherst took its point at third singles, where Emma Learned-Miller won a marathon match over Belchertown’s Katie Collins, 6-4, 1-6, 12-10.

Belchertown swept the doubles, with the No. 1 team of Kasey Gibbons and Anna Stamp notching a 6-0, 6-1 win, and the second doubles pairing of Alena Karabetsos and Amanda Murray scoring a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Frontier 4, SICS 1 – No. 1 singles Sydney Scanlon (6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 singles Maddie Powers (6-0, 6-0) didn’t drop a single game against their opponents, leading Frontier to its sixth win of the year. 

Boys tennis

Northampton 5, East Longmeadow 0 – The Blue Devils improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season thanks to a sweep of the Spartans on Tuesday.

Reilly Fowles was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles, while teammates Max Cahillane (No. 2, 6-3, 6-3) and Durrell Patrick (No. 3, 6-4, 6-0) also earned singles victories.

Aidan and Ethan Metz teamed for a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles for Northampton, and the second doubles pairing of Maitreya Abend and Oliver Levine were 6-0, 6-3 victors.

Ludlow 4, Belchertown 1 – Trevor Weiss won the Orioles’ lone point at No. 1 singles, where he defeated Ludlow’s Ryan Gomes, 6-1, 6-3.

Longmeadow 5, Amherst 0 – The visiting Lancers won all five matches in straight sets on Tuesday.

Dawson Wu and Talvin Dhingra had the tightest match of the outing at second doubles, falling to Longmeadow’s Nate Brody and Justin Sown, 6-4, 6-1.

Baseball

Frontier 11, Smith Academy 4 (8) — The Redhawk bats came through to stave off a comeback attempt from the Falcons in Hatfield on Tuesday. 

Frontier took a 3-0 lead af ter two, but Smith Academy’s Griffin Smiarowski (11 strikeouts) kept the Redhawks off the scoreboard the next five innings w hile the Falcons scored two in the third and one in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. 

The Redhawks lit it up in the eighth, scoring eight runs to come away with an independent win. 

Liam Skribiski-Banack had a big day at the plate for Frontier, knocking a single, a double and a triple and knocking in an RBI.

Smiarowski paced Smith, which committed five errors in the eighth, offensively with three hits (two triples) and two RBIs. Ryan Belina, Cam Graves and Harry LaFlamme each had two hits for the Falcons.

Hampshire 8, Easthampton 4 – Jack Boyle notched his third win on the mound this season, striking out 10 in six innings of work for the Raiders on Tuesday.

Edward Przybyla (two RBIs) and Boyle (RBI) had three hits apiece, while Drew Thompson (two hits, three RBIs), Mikey Thomopson (two hits, RBI) and Justin Meunier (two hits) all had big offensive outings for Hampshire.

Connor Perrault struck out five and walked just two for the Eagles, and he finished with two hits and an RBI at the plate. Tophor Reardon added an RBI for Easthampton.

Softball

Amherst 14, Renaissance 0 (5) – The host Hurricanes scored nine runs in the first inning and cruised to another run-ruled victory on Tuesday.

It was the fifth consecutive shutout victory for Amherst, which improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season. So far this season, the ’Canes have outscored opponents by a 70-3 margin.

Sofia Holden struck out 11 in five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks. Offensively, Nina Holden paced the hosts with a 4-for-4 day and three RBIs. Riana Shaw, Grace Johnson and Maria Konieczny all had three hits, and Konieczny drove in four runs. Sofia Holden (two hits), Steph Barton (two hits, two RBIs) and Isabella Kochan (two hits, two RBIs) all helped Amherst to a 19-hit attack in just four innings at the plate.

Mohawk Trail 15, Smith Academy 3 – Keighley Gworek struck out two in the circle and had a hit and an RBI at the plate for the Falcons.

Haley Springman, Keene Jeffress and Emilia Neves scored the runs for Smith Academy, and Jillian Lavallee added a hit.

Gateway 19, Smith Voc 9 – The Gators scored seven runs in the fifth and seventh innings to pull away and avenge a one-run loss to the Vikings one day earlier.

Kaitlyn Maynard had two hits for Gateway, which took advantage of a plethora of Smith Vocational walks to score the majority of its runs.

Daelin Murdock tripled and finished with three hits for the Vikings, while Madison O’Connor singled twice and tripled.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst 12, Agawam 6 – Skyler Ferro and Jameson Dion scored four goals apiece as the Hurricanes doubled up Agawam on Tuesday.

Dion added two assists for Amherst, which also received goals from Linus Hazen, Jamie Park, Tri Nguyen and Elias Lundquist.

Girls lacrosse

Hampshire 18, Monson 6 – Mary Thibault and Hailey Raffa scored four goals each, and the Raiders handled Monson for a decisive victory on Tuesday.

Hampshire, which led 10-5 at halftime, also received a hat trick from Reagan Mott, while Reese O’Connell netted two goals and two assists and Rylie Simmons added a pair of tallies. Dana Warren chipped in four assists for the Raiders, and goalie Abby Hennessy made four saves in net.

Amherst 16, Pittsfield 3 – Talia Sadiq continued to fill up the net, as the Amherst star buried six goals to propel the Hurricanes to a convincing win.

Abi Como notched a hat trick for Amherst, and Claire Kennedy scored twice. Other offensive contributors included Francesca Sloan (assist), Kiko Bhowmik (goal, three assists), Jenna Schilling (three assists), April Schilling (goal, assist), Emilia Luetjen (goal, assist) and Thea Binzen (goal, assist).

Cedar Conrad stopped eight shots in net for the Canes.

Agawam 20, Northampton 12 – Chloe Denhart netted five goals, Immani Power-Greene scored four and Eloise Ruberti notched two in a loss to Agawam on Tuesday. 

Also scoring for Northampton was Olivia Wright. Goalie Riley Shea made two saves in net. 

Boys volleyball

Frontier 3, PV Christian 0 – Brady Burch slammed 12 kills and led the team with 13 digs in a straight set victory over Pioneer Valley Christian. 

Ngawang Deter and Tavo Vincent-Warner tossed up 19 and 13 assists, respectively. Jesse Kurkulonis added seven kills and Owen Babb had two blocks for the Redhawks.
