High schools: Dana Warren, Northampton girls tennis outlast South Hadley (PHOTOS)

The Northampton girls tennis team bested South Hadley 4-1 on Wednesday at JFK Middle School.

Northampton’s Dana Warren captured a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Esther Ngure at No. 1 singles.

Blue Devils No. 2 singles player Summer Sorenson prevailed 6-1, 6-0 against Yanna Stefaglo, and Lorisa Dice beat Estella Estrada 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Annalisa Agliati and Ursula Von Goeler prevailed 6-2, 6-2 for Northampton at No. 1 doubles over Grace O’Shea and Sarah Cormier.

South Hadley’s Rylee Suchenicz and Maddie Bruso bested Vivian McAmis and Theo Starr 6-1, 6-1. 

Agawam 4, Belchertown 1 – Ava Shea swept Olivia Gryszowka 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to lead the Orioles on the road.

Amber Dummon beat Gabriella Manes 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, while Belchertown swept both doubles matches.

Baseball

Belchertown 10, Wahconah 3 — Locked in a 3-3 game in the sixth inning, the visiting Orioles pushed four across in the frame and added three more in the seventh to pull away for a key road win in the Berkshires on Wednesday.

Ian McDonald, Josh Misiaszek, Tyler McDonald and Derek Gould all had two hits in the victory, while Joey Mankowsky and Evan Ferguson each drove in three runs. Brady Perkins earned the win on the mound, striking out three in five innings of work against a tough Wahconah lineup. Jake Waller pitched two scoreless innings of relief to lock it down.

Hopkins 11, Easthampton 1 (5) – Liam Flynn with 3-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs, as the Golden Hawks rebounded from their first loss.

Hopkins Academy pitcher Patrick Fitzgibbons allowed just three hits with 11 strikeouts. Yuki Ishida (two RBIs) and Cody West both had two hits and scored two runs.

Easthampton’s Zak Thibodeau singled and doubled and scored the Eagles run, while Jake Kostek doubled.

Greenfield 10, Hampshire 7 – Seven errors hurt the Raiders in a road loss. The Green Wave scored five runs in the fifth on five of those errors.

Hampshire’s Drew Thompson tripled and singled, scoring two runs, while Liam Pond, Jacob Sicard and Zach Phakos each doubled.

Edward Przybyla doubled and scored a run for the Raiders, while Jusitn Meunier added a single and a run.

South Hadley 11, Granby 1 (6) – Jackson Keller and Owen Labrecque drove in two runs each for the Tigers, which scored three runs in the sixth to put the game away.

South Hadley’s Ben Foley crossed home plate three times, and Jack Maziarz walked three times and drove in a run. Nate Carillion and Jon Viola (double) added an RBI each. Ryan Netkovick doubled for the Tigers.

Viola allowed just six hits and struck out four with zero walks.

Granby’s Collin Murdock singled twice, while Nick Misiaszek drove in the Rams’ run in the top of the sixth.

Frontier 16, Athol 6 — The Redhawks exploded for five runs in the second and tacked four runs on in the seventh to pull away with a Suburban League West triumph over the Bears.

Wyatt Edes cracked a pair of hits for Frontier while Eathon Bryant and Brady Poreda hit safely in the win. 

Softball

Holyoke 13, Belchertown 10 – Kylie Blaha laced five hits including a double and a triple and picked up the win in the circle for the Purple Knights. She scored three runs and drove in two. 

Holyoke’s Tryana Ayala homered and drove in two runs, and Naniya Lagoy singled twice with three RBIs. Murphy (two runs) and Perez (walk) also had two RBIs for the Purple Knights, and Jaycalee Santos scored two runs. 

Belchertown’s Lex Piwico singled four times with an RBI, while Julianne Cozine (RBI, run) added three hits and Olivia Lafayette (two RBIs) had two. Kiera Ryan drove in three runs, and Vivian Ross tripled for the Orioles.

The Purple Knights trailed 9-7 after the top of the fifth inning when Belchertown scored four runs but responded with six of their own in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good. 

Westfield Tech 6, Gateway 0 – Willow Hicks and Kaitlyn Maynard notched one hit apiece in Gateway’s shutout loss to Westfield Tech. 

Pitcher Angela Magyar struck out nine batters and five walks in the loss while allowing eight hits. 

Turners Falls 24, Smith Academy 1 – Smith Academy’s Caitlin Graves plated and Emilia Neves picked up a hit for the Falcons. Pitcher Keighley Gworek struck out one in the loss. 

South Hadley 7, Palmer 0 – Ara Powers notched two hits and three RBIs and Isabella Schaeffer had two hits and two runs in the Tigers’ win on Wednesday. 

Schaeffer was a force in the circle, tossing 18 strikeouts and allowing just one hit. 

Granby 32, Paulo Friere 12 – Quinlin Cook dropped in six hits for the Rams, driving in seven runs with three doubles. She scored five times. Kaitlyn Curran added five RBIs and four hits. Cassandra Flaherty homered and added seven RBIs with five hits.

Boys tennis

Minnechaug 3, Belchertown 2 – The Orioles No. 2 doubles team of Tyler Burrows and Luke Dudek beat Joshua Lawrence and Alex Gormley 6-3, 6-1. 

Belchertown No. 1 singles player Trevor Weiss beat Kevin Ohemeng 6-2, 6-3.

Girls track & field

Hampshire 94, Palmer 40 — Rylee Joseph won both the long (13-11.5) and triple jumps (30-0), while Kat Simmons took first in the shot put (21-7.5) and discus (65-3) to help the Raiders to a comfortable victory on Wednesday.

Other Hampshire winners included Tessa Burke (pole vault, 8-0), Ava Gaida (100 hurdles, 17.2), Maggie Lashway (mile, 6:26), Audrey Perrone (400, 69.5), Sicily Chase (800, 2:48.3), Charlotte Letendre (200, 30.2) and Kathleen Barry (2-mile, 12:59.5).

Agawam 73, Amherst 71 – The Hurricanes fell just short in a dual meet against Agawam on Wednesday.

Tamar Byl-Brann won both the mile (5:42) and the 800 meter (2:58.9), Elizabeth Sawicki took first in the 400 hurdles (1:12.3) and pole vault (6-0) and Courtnegail Rose placed first in the discus (80-10) and shot put (29-10). 

Amherst also won the 4x400 relay with a team of Sawicki, Bevin Montgomery-Gehrt, Ruby Austin and Vivi Bernier. 

Frontier 144, Athol 0 – Athol didn’t score a single point against the Redhawks in a dual meet on Wednesday. 

Four different Redhawks won a pair of individual events. Lilly Novak won both the discus (76-2) and the javelin (80-6), Summer Sobieski took first in the long jump (14-8.25) and high jump (4-4), Sophia Leone crossed the line first in the 100 meter (13.3) and the 200 (28.3) and Abigail Howard won the 800 meter (2:49.9) and the mile (5:56.5).

Boys track & field

Hampshire 95, Palmer 37 — Ayden St. Martin won three individual events, taking first in the long jump (17-5.25), high jump (5-2) and 100 hurdles (19.4) to help the Raiders cruise to a dual win.

Jaiden Kudelka also won three events — the triple jump (39-2.75), pole vault (8-6) and 100 (11.4) for Hampshire.

Frontier 127, Athol 12 — Alex Schreiber won the shot put (36-5.5) and discus (114-3), Ian Burt took the long jump (17-10.75) and triple jump (35-6.5) while Erich Brown won the high jump (6-0) and 400 hurdles (68.0) and Ben Cachiguango came in first in the 110 hurdles (17.0) and the 200 (24.1) as the Redhawks picked up a win over the visiting Bears on Wednesday. 

Other Frontier winners were Adrien Pazmandy in the pole vault (9-0) and 400 (55.2), Fernando Saravia in the 100 (11.6), Luke Howard in the mile (4:48.3), Aidan Valderrama in the 800 (2:11.4) and Evan Hedlund in the 2 mile (10:26.2). The Redhawks won the 4x100 (47.9) and 4x400 (3:50.3) relays. 

Boys volleyball

Frontier 3, Granby 0 – Jesse Kurkulonis put down 11 kills with three digs, as the Redhawks won 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 on the road. Frontier’s Ngawang Deter pulled up 20 digs, while Tavo Vincent-Warner added 23 assists. Owen Babb had seven kills for the Redhawks (5-0).

Williston results

Liv Ferebee and Scarlette Graybill each netted four goals, as the Williston Northampton girls lacrosse team moved to 2-0 with a 15-8 win over Miss Porter’s School on Wednesday.

The Wildcats, which led 11-3 at halftime, also received two goals apiece from Meghan Carey (South Hadley), Louisa Coughlin (Amherst) and Katherine Kang (Amherst).

• Elsewhere, match medalist Eric Carter shot 38 to help the boys golf team to a win over Cheshire Academy (202-242). Tyler Kirk (39) and Brady Clark (40) also played well.

• The girls golf team dropped a pair to Ethel Walker and Hotchkiss despite a 43 from Mayphia Zhou.

•  Caleb Boyko (Granby) launched a grand slam and Drew Renzella smacked a three-run home run to lift the baseball team past Wilbraham Monson Academy, 17-3. Connor Capshaw (Southampton) was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs, while Jake Smith (Hadley), Colin Larson (Easthampton), Hudson Fulcher-Melendy (Easthampton) and James Elliott (Leeds) all had doubles. Jack Berrien (Easthampton), Nolan Puglisi and  Colin Larson combined for 10 strikeouts in five innings. 

• Catie Putt and Jenna Guglielmi were both 4-for-4 and combined for nine RBIs as Williston took down Marianapolis, 14-4.

• Katya Krasnovskaya (8-2) and Annika Song (8-4) won in the first two singles spots to send the girls tennis team past Cushing, 6-1. Ashley Zhang won a marathon 8-6 match at No. 3 singles.
