WESTFIELD – Isabella LeBarron’s eyes widened as the ball dribbled toward her.

The Hampshire Regional sophomore crept closer to the Pittsfield goal as Ella Forest and Maisie Bowler unleashed close range attempts in Wednesday’s Western Massachusetts Class B girls soccer quarterfinals. All of the ruckus left a gap on the opposite side of the goal.

LeBarron looped her first-touch shot over the morass and the Generals keeper, nestling the ball in the corner of the net in the 18th minute.

“It’s just kind of follow through, 100 percent, all of the time. You don’t know when the ball’s going to pop out and it’s just being intense and going strong,” LeBarron said. “I was like, this is my chance. I got my foot right.”

It was the only chance either team finished but proved enough in a 1-0 victory at Roots Athletic Complex. The No. 3 seeded Raiders (12-4-1) will face No. 2 Belchertown at 4 p.m. as part of a doubleheader Friday in the semifinals.

“We know that they’re a tremendous program who’s had a lot of success. We’ve had our success,” Hampshire coach Stephen Croft said. “We’re going to go in and work hard and expect it to be a good game.”

Wednesday’s quarterfinal proved a better game than Croft wanted. The Raiders generated other chances but couldn’t separate themselves with a second tally. It was the third tight game the Kurty/Fielding rivals have contested. They’ve played two one-goal games and also drew.

“We definitely could have had a few more opportunities and made our lives a little bit easier in terms of putting insurance balls in,” Croft said. “That's the nature of playoff games. Both teams are playing hard, and it's difficult to get goals.”

Hampshire keeper Makena Rogalski kept a clean sheet with five saves, but the Raiders defense largely limited the shots she faced in the second half.

No. 4 Hampshire 2, No. 5 Monument Mt. 0 – Jesse Connors ducked behind the leaping Monument Mountain wall as Charlie Por slid the free kick under them. He was all alone with the keeper, but the sideline approached closer with every step. Connors saved it back toward the six-yard box, trying to keep it in bounds. The ball snuck between the Monument Mountain keeper and the near post, doubling the Raiders lead in the 30th minute on Wednesday at Roots Athletic Complex.

“It was going out of bounds, so I was just trying to get a foot on it. Got a little lucky with that one,” Connors said. “We’ve been working on that. It’s worked before but to get a goal off it, it’s so motivating and we’ll definitely be running that one again.”

Aidan Miklasiewicz opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Aidan Moynahan sprung him up the middle of the field with a through ball, and Miklasiewicz raced past three defenders before launching the ball into the top corner.

“We had some great building, we got a chance through and we finished it,” Miklasiewicz said. “That gave us all our momentum. It gave us a chance to run at them and do our thing.”

The Raiders (14-1-2) let off the accelerator slowly and tightened their grip as the clock waned. They ensured the Spartans were left wanting of chances at the ball until the final whistle sounded.

Hampshire now faces a rematch with No. 1 Belchertown at 6 p.m. Friday. The Orioles topped the Raiders in last season’s final to win their third straight crown.

“Obviously, we know they're a great team. They’ve got a lot of quality players,” Por said. “We're just looking to get our revenge from last year's Western Mass. final and most of all, we want to go in there, compete, play well, like we did (Wednesday) and just keep the train rolling.”
