Ice cream product development competition at UMass

AMHERST — UMass Amherst’s Department of Food Science and Herrell’s Ice Cream announce this year’s Annual Ice Cream Product Development Competition will be held on Tuesday, May 7, from 3-5 p.m., at Furcolo Hall, Room 125, 813 North Pleasant St., Amherst.

The first 100 students to arrive will have the opportunity to try every flavor and vote for the People’s Choice Award, said Charmaine Koo, this year’s instructor for the class. This year the class is divided into four teams, all of which have been testing and experimenting with flavors, textures, and ingredients of all kinds.

The judging will be done by Herrell’s Ice Cream President and CEO Judy Herrell and two of her management staff. The judging criteria includes texture, overrun, sustainability, olfactory and taste.

The final winning flavor(s) will be announced at the end of the presentations. Winning flavors will be made by Herrell’s Ice Cream on a rotating basis.

bankESB gives $25K for Chamber’s WorkHub in Easthampton

EASTHAMPTON — The Chamber of Greater Easthampton has accepted $25,000 from bankESB toward its ambitious co-workspace project, WorkHub on Union. The donation will support the development of a vibrant and collaborative co-working space, providing valuable resources for entrepreneurs, and businesses.

WorkHub on Union aims to create an innovative and inspiring environment where entrepreneurs, freelancers and small business owners can converge and thrive. Through this partnership with bankESB, the Chamber will be able to enhance the support and services offered to local professionals, fostering growth, and stimulating economic development in the community.

The WorkHub on Union will also provide access to mentorship programs, networking events, educational programming and other support services designed to accelerate the growth of startups and small business.

Construction is underway at WorkHub located at 33 Union St., which is slated to open this fall.

NORTHAMPTON — Inc. magazine recently announced that Northampton-based Marketing Doctor is No. 85 on its fourth annual Inc. 5000 Regionals: Northeast list, a ranking of the fastest-growing Northeast private companies, based in Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey.

Born of the annual Inc. 5000 franchise, this regional list looks at the most successful independent small businesses within the Northeast economy’s most dynamic segment.

The companies on the list have shown a remarkable rate of growth across all industries in the Northeast region. Between 2020 and 2022, these 198 private companies had an average growth rate of 155%; by 2023, they’d also added 14,560 jobs and $15.7 billion to the region’s economy.

Celebrating 21 years in business, Marketing Doctor is a woman-owned paid media agency offering integrated, full-service media planning, buying, measurement, and AI integration services. Adam Quenneville joins national roofing association

SOUTH HADLEY — Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding is going national with commercial roofing services. Owner and President Adam Quenneville recently joined the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) as his company moves closer to its 30th anniversary.

NRCA is one of the construction industry’s most respected and influential trade associations, and is a leading authority in the roofing industry for information, education, technology and advocacy. Member resources include national networking with fellow members, technical advice on roofing systems, health and safety training, legal assistance, member discounts on products and services, and insurance guidance.

Adam Quenneville has been known locally for residential roofing since 1996, and that will continue, but commercial roofing has become a draw for the roofer that grew up in western Massachusetts.

Quenneville spent his high school years working as a part-time roofer for Quenneville & Sons Roofing, a local residential roofing company owned by his father and uncle. After graduation in 1989, he bought an air hammer and turned a three-sided shed with a dirt floor into his first roofing headquarters and his company became Adam Quenneville Roofing & Siding.

His company grew from a residential roofing company serving western Massachusetts to a residential and commercial roofing company over the past few years, serving all New England.
