HOLYOKE – Holyoke Community College will begin offering free COVID-19 vaccinations on its campus on Aug. 24, and every Tuesday at least through the month of September.

The vaccination clinic is open to all HCC students, faculty and staff as well as Holyoke residents and the general public. It will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in parking lot M outside the Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation. The campus is located on Homestead Avenue.

The same healthcare company that has doled out over 150,000 vaccinations throughout western Massachusetts, Curative, will be managing the clinic. Both doses of the PfizerBioNTech vaccine will be offered by Curative as well as the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which only requires one dose. While walk-ins are permitted, advance registration is encouraged and can be completed online at curative.com/sites/31364.

HCC, along with all other community colleges in Massachusetts, is not mandating the vaccination for its students, faculty and staff to return to campus, although masks must be worn by everyone inside the school’s buildings.

“Even though we don’t have a mandate, we strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated,” said Narayan Sampath, the school’s vice president of Administration and Finance, said in a statement. “We want to provide every opportunity we can for people to get tested and vaccinated.”

HCC spokesman Chris Yurko said the college wanted to offer a place for its students to get vaccinated where “they’ll be spending a lot of time and in a place where they feel more comfortable.”

HCC will be offering about 400 in-person, as well as hybrid and fully remote classes, according to Yurko. He added that the situation is fluid, and the school will continue to monitor COVID-19 and “make adjustments as needed to ensure the safety and health of the campus and community.”

The vaccination clinic comes in addition to the school’s free drive-through testing site that operates six days a week from the same location as the clinic. Testing is available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
