SPRINGFIELD — An Easthampton man was arrested in Springfield Thursday afternoon after he allegedly drove his Mazda through the entrance of the Lowe’s home improvement store on Boston Road and struck a woman who was shopping inside, according to Springfield Police.

Elgin Barrow, 53, was arrested at 4:40 p.m. on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, defacement and/or vandalism of property and disorderly conduct on a public conveyance, said Ryan Walsh, the police department’s spokesman.

Barrow, who had an open can of Four Loko malt liquor beverage in his lap, drove the vehicle through the entrance of Lowe’s and about 25 yards into the store when the woman was hit, Walsh said. Lowe’s is located across from the Eastfield Mall.

The woman was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with serious, but non-life threatening injuries, Walsh said.

Walsh said a street address for Barrow was not immediately available, though Barrow is believed to divide his time between homes in Easthampton and Springfield.
