Along with her morning cup of tea, Leverett artist Lynn Peterfreund has been creating daily drawings for several years, using the exercise to reflect on her thoughts and observations, feelings, relationships with people and the general state of the world.

Now, to open what’s known as the ARC (Activate, Research, Create) series at Northampton’s A.P.E. Gallery for 2019, Peterfreund will be showing 600 of those drawings at the space and also leading a series of community workshops at which visitors can make collages or draw and write, with the aim of creating a graphic memoir built on the practice of making art daily.

The exhibit and workshops take place beginning Tuesday, May 28 and run through Sunday, June 2. The gallery will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Peterfreund, as an artist in residence, leading the free workshops each day at 1 p.m.

In press notes, Peterfreund explains that an early focus of her drawings, made with watercolor pencils, pens and watercolor paints, was trees. But for the last five years, she’s been drawing people: from relatives to friends, from students to teachers, from public figures to herself.

“The drawings as a group present an unstructured memoir,” she notes, “stories with recurring characters, thoughts and feelings about subjects ranging from dinner to death.”

While at A.P.E., Peterfreund will be working on a series of drawing books, and during her workshops she’ll be accompanied by a number of other artists including dancers, a musician/writer and textile and clay artists. Those workshops will offer basic art making skills and creative prompts, as well as studies in movement, writing, and other practices, according to press notes.
