Like many high school athletes, Easthampton’s Dawson Wolcott always knew that he wanted to play a sport in college.

That dream became a reality when he verbally committed in the fall to play at Nichols College in Dudley.

Wolcott was drawn to the Division III school early on.

“They have brand new facilities and I liked the area,” Wolcott said. “I come from a small school, so it felt like going to another small school would be good for me.”

Nichols, which has just over 1,200 students, noticed the pitcher in September and October, just a few months before he committed. Wolcott used showcase tournaments, summer league baseball and Fieldlevel, an online recruiting site for high school athletes, to get noticed by the Bison.

“There was a lot in Northborough at the New England Baseball Complex,” he said. “There were a lot of tournaments there.”

Wolcott was officially accepted in December after he applied early acceptance. He plans to study criminal justice.

Last season, the Bison went 23-19, 9-7 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Wolcott expected to play.

“I don’t think I’ll be starting right away but Coach said that he is going to expect a lot out of me and that he is going to try to give me some innings as a freshman,” Wolcott said.
