Hampshire County virus cases hit 1-day high

NORTHAMPTON — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 1,840 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 infections on Tuesday and 150 new deaths. There are now 58,302 cases statewide and 3,153 deaths.

Overall, 7% of current cases in Massachusetts require hospitalization, and 1,005 people with the virus are in intensive care units.

The state reported 509 confirmed cases in Hampshire County, 66 more than Monday’s total and the highest one-day case count since the coronavirus pandemic began. There have been 27 deaths attributed to the virus in Hampshire County,

Tuesday’s figures show 237 cases and 33 deaths in Franklin County and 3,546 cases and 346 deaths in Hampden County.

Among confirmed cases, the average age of death is 82, the average age of hospitalization is 69, and the average age of those infected is 54. More than half of all deaths from the virus — 1,810 — have occurred at long-term care facilities.

Area hospitals

Cooley Dickinson Hospital is treating 11 inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection as of Tuesday, four of whom are in the intensive care unit.

An additional 76 outpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection. The hospital has had 388 people test positive overall.

Baystate Health is treating 111 inpatients for confirmed COVID-19 infection across all of its hospitals, including 17 patients in critical care units. Of those hospitalized, 100 are at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Thirty-two inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection.

Baystate has tested 5,671 people to date, with 1,054 results coming back positive, 4,510 negative, and 107 pending results.

The percentage of those testing positive at Baystate has decreased from 24% to 18.4% since the pandemic started, and the hospital expects this percentage to continue to decline with expanded testing.

So far, 70% of those who tested positive at Baystate have either been discharged or never required hospitalization.
