Two longtime Democratic incumbents in the 1st and 2nd Congressional districts have fended off their Republican challengers.

U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield, and U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester, both won Tuesday over their respective challengers, Dean Martilli of West Springfield and Jeffrey Sossa-Paquette of Shrewsbury.

Neal received 140,143 votes to Martilli’s 86,097 votes as of Wednesday afternoon, for a margin of 61.9% to 38.1%, according to the Associated Press.

“I want to thank the people of the First District for their confidence in me. Over the last two years, and over this career, I'm proud to have delivered for central and western Massachusetts and the United States of America,” Neal said in a statement. “In the coming Congress I plan to continue working for the working people who have stood by me in this election and for so many years.”

Neal, who has served 17 terms in Congress, put a call out to the country’s leaders to protect Social Security and Medicare for current and future generations.

McGovern earned 167,450 votes to Sossa-Paquette’s 87,014 votes, for a margin of 65.8% to 34.2%.

“I’m incredibly humbled by the trust that voters of the 2nd District have placed in me to go back to D.C. and work hard on behalf of all our families,” McGovern said in a statement. “To every member of my campaign team, every grassroots supporter and volunteer, every small-dollar donor and community organizer — this is not my victory, it is yours.”

McGovern, who has served for 13 terms in Congress, congratulated his fellow elected Democrats, including Maura Healey as governor, Kim Driscoll as lieutenant governor and Andrea Campbell as attorney general. He said the voters chose truth instead of lies and love instead of hate.

“While the votes are still being counted, what is clear is that Donald Trump’s Republican Party and their extremist MAGA agenda lost. Democrats defied history in the face of an unprecedented onslaught of Republican lies,” McGovern said in a statement.

“We put people over politics to fight for lower costs, safer communities, better jobs, and a stronger democracy. We took no seat for granted, and we put Republicans on notice that we will fight like hell against their lies, cynicism and anger.”
