Amherst to hold Try Hockey for Free Day

The Amherst Hockey Association will hold a Try Hockey for Free Day for boys and girls on Nov. 9 from 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. at the Mullins Center Community Ice Rink.

The event is open to everyone ages 4 and up. Free skate rentals will be provided. Participants must bring winter gloves and a helmet of any kind. Gear (including new helmets and used skates in all sizes) will also be for sale at the rink.

Northampton hoop suburban tryouts

Northampton Boys Suburban Basketball League Team tryouts will be held on Oct. 22 and 24 at Northampton High School.

Tryouts for fifth and sixth graders will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Seventh and eighth graders will play from 7:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Cost to tryout is free. League fee is $250. (There are two scholarships available and must meet with the Board.)

Participants must arrive 15-30 minutes early to check in and warm up.

Hamp Parks youth basketball league

Northampton Parks & Recreation is accepting registrations for its Youth Basketball League for children in pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade.

Over 35 teams play each year. The divisions are: Coed Pre-K, Coed Kindergarten, boys grades 1&2 and 3-6 skills division, and girls grades 1&2 and 3-6 skills division. There are also traveling teams for 3&4 grades, 5&6 grades and 7&8 grades for both boys and girls. All participants play in every game and are placed on teams based on grade and skill level.

Mandatory preseason practices and evaluations for children in grades three and above will be held in the beginning of November. The evaluations will be held at local schools. Players must attend three of the four time slots for their grade division.

Coaches and assistant coaches are needed for the program, and for preseason practices and evaluations. The Parks & Recreation staff will train and certify each coach.

Elementary XC meet seeking runners

The sixth annual Massachusetts Elementary School Cross Country Championships will be held Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Gannon Golf Course in Lynn.

There is no entry fee

All Massachusetts students of public, parochial, charter, private elementary schools and home schooled are eligible.

The school does not need to have a formal cross country program or team to enter.
