NORTHAMPTON – The two people found dead in a Village Hill apartment Thursday died in a suspected murder-suicide, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Karina Nieves, 24, and Nelson Cardona, 26, appear to have died from gunshot wounds, the district attorney’s office said in a statement Friday afternoon. The preliminary investigation suggests that Cardona shot Nieves before turning the gun on himself, according to the statement.

Nieves and Cardona were in a long-term relationship and had three children together, the statement said. The district attorney’s office said that the children are safe and being cared for.

Neighbors said the couple had only recently moved into their home in the Hilltop Apartments West building, located at 51 Village Hill Road. The 33-unit, mixed-income apartment complex is located on the grounds of the former Northampton State Hospital off Route 66.

Francesca Piantedosi, who lives above the apartment where Nieves and Cardona lived, said she knew the family by sight and and had spoken with both members of the couple.

“They seemed pleasant,” she said.

Piantedosi also said she never heard any fighting.

“I never heard anything,” Piantedosi said. “I would have called 911 in a heartbeat.”

Piantedosi expressed concern for the children. She also said that residents of Village Hill had reached out about helping the immediate neighbors of Nieves and Cardona and their children.

“They want to do something,” she said.

Authorities said the investigation of the deaths remains ongoing and that no further information was expected to be released Friday. This incident is being jointly investigated by the Northampton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.
