The Belchertown Select Board is seeking to identify the town’s oldest resident so that it can present that person with a replica of its “Gold Cane.”

The town’s records indicate that the oldest Belchertown resident was born on April 19, 1919, according to the Select Board. Anyone with information on an older resident should contact the Office of the Select Board at 413-323-0403, or by mail at The Finnerty House, One South Main Street, P.O. Box 670, Belchertown, MA 01007. The deadline to submit names for consideration is noon on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The Boston Post presented the town of Belchertown with the gold-headed cane in 1909 for the sole purpose of passing it on to the town’s oldest resident. The Boston Post Cane is on display for the public in Lawrence Memorial Hall. Town officials say the cane is a finely crafted one that was manufactured by J.F. Fradley & Co. of New York, and made of carefully selected Gabon ebony from the Congo, Africa. The head is made of rolled 14 karat gold.
