NORTHAMPTON — City police have rescued a baby deer that appears to have been hit by a vehicle.

According to police, Officer Michael McLaughlin and Animal Control Officer Dawn Ubelaker responded to a call Monday morning about a fawn abandoned by its mother on Loudville Road.

“A concerned citizen observed the fawn,” McLaughlin said Tuesday. “They called us to further investigate.”

The officers determined that the fawn appeared to have been hit by a vehicle and had a thigh injury. The animal was brought to the station before being taken to the Northampton Animal Hospital.

This is not the first animal rescue McLaughlin has been involved in, as he has rescued a baby duck and a big snapping turtle in the past.

“I keep getting all these animal calls,” he said.

The officer said the enjoys helping out with animals, and that he is the owner of a Siberian Husky.

Northampton police are reminding motorists to inform the police if they’ve struck an animal, so that they may locate it and provide it with medical care if needed.
