AMHERST — A University of Massachusetts student entering her senior year was struck and killed by a vehicle on North East Street late Thursday night, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Hannah B. Frilot, 20, of Amherst, was hit by the vehicle shortly after 11 p.m. while she and a friend were walking north along the side of North East Street, said Michelle Richotte, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.

The Toyota RAV-4 that struck Frilot was driven northbound by 63-year-old woman who on Friday had not yet been identified. The vehicle came to an immediate stop and the driver called 911, remained at the scene and spoke with authorities, Richotte said.

Frilot, who was about to enter her senior year as an engineering student at UMass, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The friend walking with her was not seriously injured, but was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure, Richotte said.

Neither the name of the driver nor of the second pedestrian is being released, Richotte said. The driver’s name will only be released, she said, if any charges are filed.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by Amherst police, the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.

Though North East Street doesn’t have sidewalks in the area of where the accident occurred, the road does have more than two feet of pavement beyond the fog line on both sides of the road. The speed limit is 45 mph in that section of the road, which is a few hundred feet south of the intersection with Strong Street.

According to Frilot’s LinkedIn profile, she was treasurer of the UMass Pride Alliance and an assistant at the Office of Information Technologies Help Center at UMass. Frilot was also interning as an industrial engineer at Yankee Candle this summer.
