50 Years Ago

■Francis J. Horan Jr. was nominated Monday as president of the Hampshire United Fund Inc. at the second annual dinner meeting at Hotel Northampton. Officers of the 1971 United Fund campaign gave presentations and plaques were awarded to outstanding contributors.

■Several area men have enlisted in the U.S. Army, among whom are: Scott Gehm of Easthampton, who enlisted for aircraft maintenance; Robert Anderson of Belchertown, military police school; Thomas Wichowski, Florence, and Wayne Lynch, Northampton, aircraft maintenance.

25 Years Ago

■Burt & Sons Inc., an Easthampton dairy, will use natural vegetation to filtrate its waste, using an $18,935 state grant. “We are trying to address a problem that is in the dairy industry as a whole,” said Adam K. Burt, one of the farm’s managers. The installation of the filters for the farm’s manure and corn waste will occur from this March to October 1997.

■Fleet Bank of Massachusetts will consolidate its two branches in the center of Amherst this summer, closing the former Shawmut branch on Amity Street. The Amherst branch is one of 41 Fleet and 40 other Shawmut branches Fleet officials say will shut down by early June.

■A top item on tonight’s South Hadley School Committee agenda will be finding a replacement for high school principal Daniel Smith, who has announced he will retire at the end of the school year. School board chairwoman JoAnn Jordan called the veteran principal, who has more than 30 years of experience with South Hadley schools, “an exceptional person who cares about students.”

■Mayor Michael A. Tautznik, the only person ever elected mayor of Easthampton, announced Tuesday that he will seek re-election to an eighth term this November. “The decision to run again was an easy one for me,” Tautznik said. “I truly appreciate serving my community and remain enthusiastic about the success we have enjoyed and the accomplishments we will make in the future.”
