Arland G. Day, Jr.: Warwick zip codes saga

Sixty-plus years ago mail for Warwick was delivered from four addresses. Warwick Star Route out of Orange served southern and western Warwick which used zip code 01364. The center of town was served by P.O. boxes at a post office using zip code 01378. The north end of Warwick had mail delivery out of Winchester, New Hampshire using zip code 03470. The east side was served by RFD #2 route out of Orange which also used 01364.

At some point the postal service ruled that no mail deliveries would cross a state line, so the north end of town was added to the Warwick Star Route. In the early 1960s the Warwick post office was eliminated (no more 01378) and the center of town households had to put up mailboxes and join the Warwick Star Route. Thus, every household in town was under zip code 01364. (Yes, some of our excise tax bills did come from the tax collector of Orange as well as other problems.)

In the 1990s, the postal service allowed the Warwick Star Route to use 01378 again because of roads with the same name in both Orange and Warwick. And later the households on RFD #2 were allowed to do the same because of the same road name issue. Today, the whole town of Warwick is using zip code 01378. Warwick’s situation might not have been exactly the same as Whately’s but there are some similarities.
