200 Years Ago

■Samuel Clarke & Sons have on hand a large stock of liquors: Old Jamaica, St. Croix, New England and Cherry Rum; Old Cognac, Spanish and Cider Brandy; Holland & Philadelphia Gin; Old Irish Whiskey; Sicily Madeira, Port, Lisbon, Malaga, Catalonia and Colmenar wines; and bottled porter.

■To be sold, a farm lying in Williamsburg, very pleasantly situated, containing about one hundred and eighty acres of land lying about one mile south from the meetinghouse on the road leading to Northampton. Said farm has standing thereon a two-story dwelling house and kitchen, a large barn, corn house, cider mill, and distillery, and an excellent orchard. Enquire of Elisha Moreton, now living on the premises.

100 Years Ago

■A new shoe store was opened on Main Street today by the Solby-Montague Co., in the store which was formerly the Elms tearoom and gift shop. The store, entirely renovated and with new show windows, gives promise of being one of the most attractive in the city.

■Miss Cora A. Stanton, a teacher in the Vernon Street School, was pleasantly surprised last evening by a group of teachers and friends, who gave her a farewell party at Boyden’s. Miss Stanton, who has been a teacher in the Northampton schools for several years, is leaving in a few days to take a position at the Abbott School in Worcester.

50 Years Ago

■Joanne L. Montgomery, a sophomore at Smith College and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Montgomery of Florence, is leaving Monday for a year’s study in Lima, Peru. At La Catolica University in Lima she will focus on Latin-American studies and will reside with a Peruvian family.

■Fauxpas, a crafts shop located on Crafts Avenue, will be leaving its downtown location and moving to Hatfield. It is the fourth shop in recent months to announce departure from downtown Northampton. In January, Knits Galore fabric shop left Pleasant Street, while McCallum’s Department Store and the Cambridge Coffee Tea and Spice House Inc. are both closing up business soon.
