200 Years Ago

■A “prospectus of a school to be established at Round Hill, Northampton, Massachusetts,” has been recently issued at Cambridge, in a pamphlet form, by Joseph G. Cogswell and George Bancroft. These gentlemen propose to establish an institution in Northampton for the education of boys, on a new plan.

■By an advertisement in this paper, it will be observed that the Hon. Mr. Mills and Judge Howe propose opening a law school in Northampton, for instructing young gentlemen in the science of law, and qualifying them for practice in their profession, by a regular and systematic course of education.

100 Years Ago

■The stream of auto campers continues to pass through this city, northward. Every night for the last week there have been several parties at the municipal camp site near Laurel Park. The parties come from the South and are making their way, with all haste, to the northland.

■An attractive program of entertainment has been arranged for tonight’s grand closing of the Blessed Sacrament church lawn party. The Lyons orchestra will repeat the program so successfully given on Saturday night and there will be features of Irish bagpipe music and step dancing.

50 Years Ago

■The long-predicted gasoline shortage has hit the area, with Hilltown gas stations, many the only supplier in their town, hard pressed to service their regular customers. Several have cut their hours of service while others have shut down completely until a new supply can be obtained.

■District Attorney John M. Callahan today announced the appointment of William E. Hassan of Amherst as a Hampshire-Franklin County district court prosecutor. Hassan is a graduate of Boston College and Western New England Law School and has been a practicing attorney in Amherst for the past eight years.
